Every year on March 22nd, World Water Day reminds us how precious and yet how threatened our water is. Since 1993, the UN has used this day to call for greater awareness of water pollution, water scarcity, and the protection of our oceans. And even if a single day a year doesn't solve all problems – it's a good opportunity to finally take action. Because the ocean needs us. Now.

🌊 Why our ocean needs help right now

The numbers speak for themselves: According to the UNEP report "Turning the Tide," around 11 million tons of plastic end up in the sea every year – and the trend is rising. Coral reefs are losing their color and life due to rising water temperatures and acidification. Seabirds, turtles, and whales die from swallowed plastic. This sounds far away, but it's not: microplastics have now even been detected in human blood.

World Water Day is the perfect opportunity to ask: What can I really do? The answer: more than you think.

1. Stop plastic waste at the source 🚫

The most effective way to protect the ocean starts at home. Consistently replace single-use plastic with alternatives: fabric bags instead of plastic bags, reusable bottles instead of PET bottles, solid shampoo instead of plastic bottles. Every piece of plastic you don't buy in the first place cannot end up in the ocean. Sounds simple – and it is.

2. Participate in a Beach Cleanup 🏖️

No marine conservation experience is more tangible than a beach cleanup. In Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, organized beach cleanups take place regularly – but starting spontaneously with friends and a garbage bag is also great. Internationally, Ocean Conservancy coordinates the world's largest cleanup annually. World Water Day is a perfect starting point.

3. Shop more consciously – even for smartphone accessories 📱

What you buy sends a message to the economy. With every Oceanmata product – whether a sustainable iPhone case or an Ocean Plastic bracelet – 1 kg of plastic is collected from the ocean. The cases themselves are made from recycled ocean plastic, sourced directly from the beaches of Bali. Consumption and marine conservation go hand in hand here.

4. Drink tap water instead of bottled water 💧

In Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, tap water is of drinking water quality – often even more strictly controlled than bottled mineral water. A single reusable bottle replaces an average of 156 plastic bottles per year. Projecting this to everyone who does it: a massive amount of less plastic waste that can never enter the ocean.

5. Adopt a marine animal 🐢

Do you love marine animals? Then do something concrete good for them. With an Oceanmata marine animal adoption, you directly support the protection of endangered species – from marine mammals to turtles. This is a gift that lasts: for you, for someone you give it to, and most importantly, for the animal.

6. Less meat, less fertilizer, fewer algal blooms 🌿

The connection sounds abstract, but it's real: Industrial agriculture is one of the biggest polluters of coastal waters. Over-fertilized fields flush nitrates into rivers and seas, leading to massive oxygen-depleted zones. Eating less meat – especially red meat from factory farming – indirectly reduces the burden on our coasts. Don't be perfect, but become more conscious.

7. Share knowledge – create awareness ✊

Many people don't realize how serious the ocean's situation really is. A shared article, a conversation at dinner, an Instagram post with real numbers: awareness is the first step to change. Share this article if it means something to you. And if you don't know Oceanmata yet – check out our story. We work every day to make marine conservation tangible.

When Dominik quit his job as an engineer at Airbus in 2020 to found Oceanmata, he knew: The fight against ocean plastic starts with small steps. What began as an idea on a littered beach in Bali is now a team of 11 employees in Medewi, collecting plastic every day.

Every day can be World Water Day

March 22nd is a symbol – but real change happens on the other 364 days of the year. At Oceanmata, we believe that small everyday decisions make big waves. With every Oceanmata product, you become part of a movement that is serious: 1 kg of plastic out of the ocean – for every single product. No more, no less. Hands-on instead of promises.
